1. Prayers and Portraits: Unfolding the Netherlandish Diptych

The diptych format—essentially two hinged panels that can be opened and closed like a book—was ideal for portraying a donor on one panel praying to holy personages on the facing panel. This exhibition reunites several diptych paintings that had been dispersed to distant collections.

2. Strokes of Genius: Rembrandt's Prints and Drawings

Seated Old Man, 1630, Rosenwald Collection, 1943.3.7047Beloved for his paintings, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) is equally renowned for his etchings and drawings. This exhibition, shown from November 19, 2006, through March 18, 2007, features the Gallery's own collection, one of the greatest in the world. Included are numerous self-portraits, scenes of ordinary life, fresh visions of landscape, portraits of friends and dignitaries, and touching reinterpretations of religious stories.

3. The Dutch Cabinet Galleries

The Bedroom, 1658/1660, Widener Collection, 1942.9.33The Dutch Cabinet Galleries, which opened in 1995, provide a suite of intimately sized rooms for exhibiting the small-scale Dutch and Flemish paintings in the collections of the National Gallery of Art. In addition, these galleries provide an ideal space for focus exhibitions that place Dutch and Flemish works in their historical context.

4. Early Netherlandish Painting Lectures

Artists explored the physical and spiritual worlds in new ways, witnessed a resurgent interest in the individual, and drew inspiration from both the medieval past and Italian humanism. The department of adult programs offers a variety of programs celebrating this dynamic era.

5. Dutch Educational Resources

These programs include surveys of the artistic careers and works of Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Gerard ter Borch, and Vincent van Gogh.

6. Summer Internship Opportunities

Nine-week summer internships provide opportunities to work on projects directed by a Gallery curator or department head.
