2. This Month's Featured Artwork from the National Gallery of Art Collection: J.M.W. Turner, Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight, 1835

Although the subject of the painting—hauling coal before daybreak—is rooted in the grim realities of the industrial revolution, in Turner's hands it transcends the specifics of time and place and becomes an image of startling visual poetry. The work is currently part of the J.M.W. Turner retrospective on view at the Gallery through January 6, 2008.

3.Elizabeth Murray, 1940–2007

Inspired by work that ranged from Cezanne's still lifes to comic strips, Murray's paintings were known for their bright palette and apparent humor. Explore her work online in the Gallery's collection and in its Gemini G.E.L. (Graphic Editions Limited) online catalogue raisonne, which presents the work of the acclaimed Los Angeles print and sculpture workshop from its beginning in 1966 through 1996.

5. Listen to the Hopper-Inspired Aria Podcast

Listen to the premiere performance of "Out my one window," an aria by renowned composer John Musto and librettist Mark Campbell. The entire opera will be performed this fall at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, November 15–18, 2007, and at the National Gallery of Art on December 2, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. in the East Building Auditorium.
