2. This Month's Featured Artworks from the National Gallery of Art Collection: The Voyage of Life: Childhood, Youth, Manhood, Old Age by Thomas Cole

Image: The Voyage of Life: Childhood Image: The Voyage of Life: Youth Image: The Voyage of Life: Manhood Image: The Voyage of Life: Old Age Thomas Cole's renowned four-part series traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the "River of Life." From the innocence of childhood, to the flush of youthful overconfidence, through the trials and tribulations of middle age, to the hero's triumphant salvation, The Voyage of Life seems intrinsically linked to the Christian doctrine of death and resurrection. On view in the West Building, Ground Floor, Gallery 39.

5. Recent Acquisition: Washerwomen on the Banks of the Durance by Paul Guigou

Image: Recent Acquisition: Washerwomen on the Banks of the Durance by Paul GuigouPaul Guigou (1834–1871) was one of a generation of mid-19th-century French landscape painters who, reacting against the cultural domination of Paris, asserted their provincial identity by celebrating their local landscapes and ways of life. Washerwomen on the Banks of the Durance is a work fully characteristic of Guigou. It shows a group of local washerwomen, wrapped against the heat of the sun, at work on the riverbank. His manner of painting is strong and heavily impastoed, a painterly equivalent for the typically rugged Provencal terrain that he favored. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 83.
