1. JAN LIEVENS ON THE WEB

Image: JAN LIEVENS ON THE WEBJan Lievens began his career in Leiden as a friend and rival of Rembrandt, but he soon aspired to an international career. One of the most fascinating and enigmatic Dutch artists of the 17th century, Lievens was an innovative painter, printmaker, and draftsman. The exhibition Jan Lievens: A Dutch Master Rediscovered presents 55 paintings—several of them newly discovered—as well as about 30 prints and 50 drawings. Take a closer look at exhibition highlights on our new Web feature, which provides context for and analysis of Lievens’ wide range of memorable works. PDFs of the exhibition brochure and an excerpt from the catalogue are also available, along with educational resources, related online exhibitions, and information about Gallery events.

2. THIS MONTH'S FEATURED ARTWORK FROM THE COLLECTION: THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST BY MASTER OF THE SAINT BARTHOLOMEW ALTAR

Image: THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST</em> BY MASTER OF THE SAINT BARTHOLOMEW ALTARSaints played a very important role in the popular piety of the late Middle Ages and were considered to be mediators between the individual worshiper and God. In The Baptism of Christ (c. 1485/1500), 14 saints are vividly characterized by costume and attributes. The gold background, the luminescent cloud on which the saints float, and the unrealistic island setting for the Baptism itself all impart a visionary quality to the scene. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 35A.

5. RECENT ACQUISITION: BITUMEN BY TERRY WINTERS

Image: RECENT ACQUISITION: BITUMEN BY TERRY WINTERSBitumen (1986) is a work from the first decade of Terry Winters’ career, when he was exploring such basic natural processes as crystal formation, fungal growth, and cellular division—and when he was equally immersed in the natural history of painting itself. The addition of this early, but classic, Winters work will help the Gallery tell the story of painting in the 1980s, when artists such as Jasper Johns, Anselm Kiefer, Brice Marden, and others proved the continuing vitality of expressive abstract painting. On view in the East Building, Concourse, Gallery 29B.
