1. New Web Feature Launches: Richard Misrach: On the Beach

Image: New Web Feature Launches: Richard Misrach: On the BeachIn tandem with the opening of the exhibition, the Gallery Web site features an up-close look at the work of American photographer Richard Misrach. In the days immediately following September 11, 2001, Misrach took a series of large-scale, lushly colored photographs of swimmers and sunbathers in Hawaii. In this series, On the Beach, Misrach eliminated all references to the horizon and sky to record people immersed in the idyllic environment, yet a strange sense of disquietude pervades. Preview these 19 provocative images before viewing the oversized photographs, some nearly 10 feet wide, in person at the Gallery (May 25–September 1, 2008).

2. This Month's Featured Artwork from the National Gallery of Art Collection: The Suitor's Visit by Gerard ter Borch

Image: This Month's Featured Artwork from the National Gallery of Art Collection: The Suitor's Visit by Gerard ter BorchIn this painting, Dutch artist Gerard ter Borch captured the refinement of the wealthy bourgeoisie in the second half of the 17th century. His main focus was the psychological interaction of the two protagonists, the suitor and the standing woman, who communicate through their glances and gestures. Seen in the context of the musical instruments and dog, both of which have associations of love, their meeting has strong sexual overtones. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 50.

6. Online Tour: Fresco Cycle with the Story of Procris and Cephalus

Image: Online Tour: Fresco Cycle with the Story of Procris and CephalusOur Web tour of the month features nine paintings that comprise the only Italian Renaissance fresco series in America. Fresco (Italian for "fresh") uses earth pigments that are painted quickly on damp plaster. Some three centuries after these murals were created by Bernardino Luini, they were removed from their original setting and mounted as panels. Our online tour guides you through each panel, telling the story of Procris and Cephalus, an ancient poem retold as a Renaissance drama. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 26.
