What's New on the NGA Web-November 2008

1. POMPEII AND THE ROMAN VILLA ON THE WEB

In conjunction with the exhibition Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples (October 19, 2008–March 22, 2009), a host of multimedia components is now available on our Web site. The exhibition presents ancient sculptures, paintings, mosaics, and luxury arts from the Bay of Naples, a favorite retreat for vacationing emperors. A video podcast, excerpted from a new documentary film, shows original footage of houses in Pompeii and the seaside villas that dotted the coastline of the Bay of Naples. A five-part audio podcast features guest curator and professor Carol Mattusch discussing the vacationing Roman elite who inhabited this region, the sculptures from the villas, the villa and garden designs, and more. Finally, two slideshows—"Pompei" by Giorgio Sommer and Documenting Discovery: The Excavation of Pompeii and Herculaneum—present touristic and historical documents from the 18th and 19th centuries, when these ancient sites were first excavated.

2. THIS MONTH'S FEATURED ARTWORK FROM THE COLLECTION: AN ARAPAHOE BOY BY GEORGE DE FOREST BRUSH

An Arapahoe Boy is one of only two life studies known to survive from George de Forest Brush's 1882 trip to Wyoming, where he spent several months among the Arapahoe and Shoshone. Fresh from years of study focused on the human face and figure, Brush shows himself at his best—both as a skilled portraitist and as one of the most important interpreters of the American Indian in 19th-century American art. An Arapahoe Boy is on view in the exhibition George de Forest Brush: The Indian Paintings, East Building, Ground Level.

A wonderful array of abundantly illustrated catalogues is now available for sale in our online shop. 4. RECENT ACQUISITION: WHITE BREAD BY JAMES ROSENQUIST

James Rosenquist, one of the leaders of the pop art movement of the 1960s, created White Bread during a pivotal period in the early years of his long career. White Bread is not only a painting about culture and consumption made at a high point of American consumerism, but it is also a painting about painting, about the application of color to a support and its stunning visual results. This work is a significant addition to the Gallery's collection, joining paintings from the same period by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, as well as numerous prints and several drawings by Rosenquist from all periods of his continuing career. 5. PLAN AHEAD: TEACHER WORKSHOP, DISCOVER! THE INDIAN PAINTINGS OF GEORGE DE FOREST BRUSH

Drawing on the current exhibition George de Forest Brush: The Indian Paintings, this teacher workshop (December 6 and 13, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.) examines the artistic and cultural sources of these extraordinary and little-known paintings, many on view in public for the first time. 6. ONLINE ARCHITECTURE TOURS

Learn more about the architecture of the National Gallery of Art through online tours of the West Building, East Building, and Sculpture Garden. Six features offer insight into the design and architecture of the East Building and include a virtual tour of I. M. Pei's modernist museum; a closer look at the West Building's sculpture galleries and changes to the building over 60 years; and the chronology, construction, plantings, and artworks of the popular Sculpture Garden.

7. FOREIGN-LANGUAGE VISITOR AND GALLERY GUIDES

A visitor guide to the National Gallery of Art is now available on our Web site in Chinese, English, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Visitors from around the world can learn about the Gallery's history, collections, and amenities, and color-coded floor plans of the East and West Buildings and Sculpture Garden illustrate the location of specific collections. Gallery guides available in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish offer an in-depth look at the collections, from medieval decorative arts to impressionist landscapes. Each guide includes an overview as well as images and descriptions of exemplary artworks in the Gallery.

8. INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW ONLINE

The Gallery's long tradition of internships that offer in-depth training in a museum setting continues. November 1
On November 1, 1943, Wall Street millionaire Chester Dale was elected a trustee of the National Gallery of Art. Dale was a discerning art collector who commissioned a number of portraits of himself, including one by Salvador Dali in which he is shown with his beloved black poodle Coco.
