2. THIS MONTH'S FEATURED WORK OF ART FROM THE COLLECTION: CENTAURESSE BY STANLEY WILLIAM HAYTER

Image: Centauresse Image: Centauresse Image: Centauresse Image: Centauresse Image: Centauresse Centauresse is Stanley William Hayter's first multicolor print using a single copper plate, a method he called "simultaneous color printing." Instead of working in the customary method with multiple plates, each inked in a different color, he printed multiple colors using a single plate in one run through the press. This group of five impressions illustrates Hayter's gradual development of the plate for Centauresse and his investigations with color. On view in the exhibition Stanley William Hayter: From Surrealism to Abstraction, in the West Building, Ground Floor, East Outer Tier.

3. RECENT ACQUISITION: A QUIET DAY NEAR MANCHESTER BY ALFRED THOMPSON BRICHER

Image: RECENT ACQUISITION: A QUIET DAY NEAR MANCHESTER BY ALFRED THOMPSON BRICHERAlfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837–1908) began his career as a painter of autumnal landscapes, but by the late 1860s he had become a specialist in seascapes. His favorite subjects were the beaches and headlands of the New England coast, and he excelled at depicting such scenes in calm weather and lit by serene, luminous skies. At his best, as in the radiant A Quiet Day near Manchester, he was capable of equaling the finest work of his fellow marine painters, John Frederick Kensett, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and Martin Johnson Heade. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 67.

4. NEW VIDEO PODCAST: TALK ABOUT ART

Image: NEW VIDEO PODCAST: TALK ABOUT ARTTalk About Art is a six-minute documentary film that highlights the views of visitors to the National Gallery of Art. Among those who share their thoughts on art are people from all walks of life—including students, a taxi driver, an architect, a security guard, and a hairdresser. These are not art historians, but art is a common bond for them, and clearly a force in their lives. For some, art is a way to connect to the past; for others, it is a way to see the world around them in a different way. Listening to their side of the museum experience may get you talking about art as well.
