Remarks

Emil Zoler, an artist who met Stieglitz through Marsden Hartley in 1909, helped hang exhibitions at 291, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. He was a frequent visitor to Lake George in the 1920s and 1930s.

“I didn’t tell you that this afternoon I set Zoler ripping down more shelving in the old little room—& ripping down the remaining burlap —. I made a photograph of him—he enjoyed the job—& I enjoyed the destruction—& his enjoyment.—The place looks as if it had been raped by the terrible Germans!” (Stieglitz to Georgia O’Keeffe, 24 June 1917, as quoted in Sarah Greenough and Juan Hamilton, Alfred Stieglitz: Photographs & Writings [Washington, 1983], 202).
