Provenance

Private collection, England;[1] (Van Diemen Galleries, Berlin), by June 1929;[2] sold 1930 to William R. Timken [1866-1949], New York; by inheritance to his widow, Lillian Guyer Timken [1881-1959], New York; bequest 1960 to NGA.

[1] The dealer's prospectus (in NGA curatorial files) describes the painting as "from private collection in England."

[2] According to the opinions gathered by Van Diemen Galleries and sent to the Timkens, the painting was in Berlin undergoing restoration by June 1929 (copies in NGA curatorial files).
