This three-part program, developed in conjunction with American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams, grapples with several of the exhibition’s themes having to do with the American West through the moving image.

About Ancient Sunshine (2021)

Using interviews with Utah Tar Sands Resistance organizers and other Utah land protectors, Ancient Sunshine interweaves the endless remaking of the Western landscape with labor history, reflections on US anarchist organization, and interspecies economies, such as animal husbandry, setting their voices in and against an industrialized landscape. (Jason Livingston, 2021, digital, 20 minutes)

About The United States of America (1978 and 2021)

Also included are two films by James Benning, both entitled The United States of America: the original short film from 1975, made in collaboration with Bette Gordon (16mm to digital, 27 minutes), and the most recent version, “Benning’s paean to the ideals and hard truths of the American cultural landscape…portraying the country’s 50 states plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia …as sites that exist in the imagination as well as through representational sounds and images… This is a landscape that is haunted by its past, evidence of which can be seen, heard and felt throughout the film” —Steve Anker. (James Benning, 2021, DCP, 98 minutes)
