Haiti’s economy hinges on the work and legacy of the Madan Sara: generations of women who work tirelessly to buy, distribute, and sell food and other essentials in markets throughout the country. This documentary is both an overview of these women’s daily struggles and communities and a personal reflection about the women who are the backbone of Haitian society. Beginning and concluding with the words of renowned Haitian writer Edwige Danticat reading excerpts from her first novel, Breath, Eyes, Memory, the film amplifies the calls of the many Madan Sara as they speak directly to society to share their dreams for a more just Haiti.
