Shot near the end of the German occupation, Falbalas marks the start of Becker’s foray into the 1940s Paris milieu that was to be become his métier — a visual theme he continued to advance in subsequent films. Set in the world of Parisian haute couture, Falbalas’s tragicomedy revolves around the romantic maneuverings within one of the city’s flourishing fashion houses. (1945, subtitles, 111 minutes)
