A poetic, allegorical non-fiction tale told in cinéma-vérité style, Thamp̄  explores the transience of human relationships and the rootlessness of the marginalized. The arrival of a roving circus troupe at a small village on the banks of the Nila river in Kerala gently disrupts the daily lives of the inhabitants for a moment. Restored by Film Heritage Foundation, The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, Cineteca di Bologna, and L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory, and in association with General Pictures, National Film Archive of India and the family of Aravindan Govindan. (Govindan Aravindan, 1978, Malayalam with English subtitles, DCP, 130 minutes)

The National Gallery partners with the University of Maryland and the Cineteca di Bologna film archive to host two special programs from the most recent iteration of the Italian film festival Il Cinema Ritrovato.
