Sistren in Photography

Sistren in Photography brings us five photographers from Birmingham—Claudette Holmes, Balbir Kaur, Vicky Okoosi, Dawn Selman, and Maxine Walker—who talk about their practice, experience, and inspiration. Discussions on gender and race intertwine with examples from each artist’s portfolio. A look into each photographers’ process culminates in a historic analogue video art demonstration and a lesson in wet darkroom picture manipulation. (Aphra Video collective, 1991, UK, 26 minutes)

Dalda 13-A Portrait of Homai Vyarawalla

India’s first female photojournalist, Homai Vyarawalla (1913–2012) documented major political and cultural figures during a career that spanned India’s transition from colonial rule to independence. Featuring in-depth interviews with her, Dalda 13-A Portrait of Homai Vyarawalla not only offers this unusual first-person insight but also delves into her experiences within the society where she lived and worked. (Monica Baker, 1995, UK, 23 minutes)

Both archival documentary videos, from the vaults of the London-based Cinenova, are presented in conjunction with the exhibition The New Woman Behind the Camera.
