Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), a charismatic, visionary, and controversial cultural figure in twentieth-century Germany, was a leader in the emergent media art environment of the 1960s. A new feature documentary by Andres Veiel, Beuys is compiled from recently discovered photographs and rare television footage of installations, happenings and performances, conversations, and public teaching and debates. With his outspoken and imaginative views on the role of art in society, Beuys continues to influence the contemporary art world three decades after his death.
