This lecture investigates the attraction for “things Spanish” in European art and culture of the 19th century. From opera and dance to songs and folktales, the novel and painting, the rich cultural heritage of Spain provided inspiration for artists as diverse as George Bizet, Giuseppe Verdi, Alfred de Musset, Prosper Mérimée, Édouard Manet, and John Singer Sargent.
