The days are gone when a museum could comfortably classify its holdings as paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, or decorative arts. Since the 1960s, visual artists have increasingly turned to film, video, audio, projection, electric light, and other non-traditional media as elements of larger works or works in their own right. The National Gallery has a small but growing collection of such art by some of the leaders in the field, including Joseph Beuys, Rineke Dijkstra, Ann Hamilton, Nam June Paik, and Bill Viola. For a spectacular example, visit the moving walkway in the East Building concourse, where Leo Villareal’s Multiverse (2008) will light your way.
