American

Cuthbert, Sophie; Aspinwall, Woolsey Mrs.

Biography

Sophie Cuthbert Aspinwall is a descendant of the Cuthbert family of Beaufort and Charleston South Carolina. Two portraits in the NGA (1965.15.6-.7) represent members of the family, probably Dr. James Cuthbert (1716-1770) and his wife Mary Hazzard Wigg (1718-1787). James Cuthbert was the Scottish-born gandson of William Hay, the Bishop of Moray, and emigrated to South Carolina in 1737. In 1758 he married Mary, the widow of Edward Wigg. Their eldest child and only daughter was Jane Hay Cuthbert. Dr. James Cuthbert died in Georgia in 1770. [[Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
