Biography

Alfred Douglas Hamilton succeeded his kinsman, William Alexander Louis Stephen, 12th Duke of Hamilton and 9th Duke of Brandon, in 1895. He served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshire. His various military posts included: hon. Lt.-Col. 4th Battalion H.L.I.[?], hon. Col. 6th Battalion Scottish Rifles (for which he received a Territorial Decoration), and Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. On 4 December 1901 he married Nina Mary Benita [d. 1951], daughter of Major Robert Poore and a Dame of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. They had four sons and three daughters, of whom the eldest son, Douglas, succeeded his father as 14th Duke.
