Truax, Andries

American, 1722 - 1804

Biography

Andries was the son of Abraham and Christina (née De La Grange) Truax of Albany. His grandfather, Isaac, had settled in Schenectady, then a prosperous Dutch settlement, around 1670. Andries Truax's sister, Susanna [b. 1726], was painted in 1730 by an artist known as the Gansevoort Limner (the portrait is now in the NGA). Andries married Elisabeth [d. 1777], daughter of Ryckert Van Vranken, on 4 February 1758. He married secondly to Susanna [d. 1807], daughter of Daniel de Graaf, on 20 September 1778. The portrait of his sister was passed down in the family via Andries and Susanna (de Graaf) Truax's son, Abram [or Abraham].
