William Eells was active in compiling the Eells family history. For this reason, he was contacted by Ozias Shelton Eells, though the two were not related. The latter owned a c. 1800 copy of a portrait of his ancestor, Samuel Eells [1640-1709], by an unknown American folk painter. The picture (now in the NGA) was given to Ozias by his mother, Phebe Ely Eells [1760-1829], on the occasion of his marriage in 1828. In 1882 Ozias (then eighty-eight years old) sent the portrait to Rev. William Eells for safekeeping, and requested photographs of it in return. The Reverend later bequeathed it to Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, as the fraternity had been founded by an Eells ancestor.
