Tilton, Benjamin E., Mrs.

American

Henderson, Annie Powers

Biography

Annie Tilton (née Annie Powers Henderson), was the great niece of the Rev. William Woodward Eells [1811-1886] of Pittsburgh. The latter had bequeathed to the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, a portrait of Samuel Eells [1640-1709]. In 1924 the fraternity, which had been founded by another Eells ancestor, gave the portrait to Mrs. Tilton. She in turn donated the picture (now in the NGA) to the Milford [Connecticut] Historical Society for the Eells-Stow House, the Milford home built by Samuel Eells in the 17th century.
