The artist [1830-1902]; by inheritance to his wife, Mary Stewart Bierstadt [d. 1916];[1] two private collections; (sale, Sotheby's, New York, 17 March 1994, no. 1 [with NGA 2014.136.154 and .156]);[2] Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.

[1] Mary Hicks Stewart, widow of David Stewart, a Boston banker, married the artist in 1894, a year after the death of his first wife, Rosalie Bierstadt.

[2] Early provenance according to the Sotheby's auction catalogue. The painting was acquired from Mrs. Bierstadt by the father of the consignor to the auction.
