This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery.

Overview: A companion exhibition to Jan Steen featured 38 Netherlandish genre prints from the National Gallery's collection, dating from the late 15th to the late 17th century. The show demonstrated that certain themes and motifs remained popular, although the character of the images often adapted to conform to changes in morals, taste, and fashion.

Organization: Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., curator of northern baroque paintings, was curator of the exhibition.
