Installation view of Let the World In: Prints by Robert Rauschenberg from the National Gallery of Art and Related Collections, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Gallery Archives

This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery.

Overview: 59 prints created by American artist Robert Rauschenberg throughout his career were on view in this exhibition. The works were selected from the holdings of the National Gallery of Art, supplemented by loans from the artist and other collectors. The title of the exhibition was drawn from a statement by art historian Leo Steinberg, who wrote that Rauschenberg's art "let the world in again" by using everyday objects at a time when abstraction dominated. The presentation was arranged chronologically in five galleries, starting with Rauschenberg's prints from the early 1960s and continuing into the first decade of the 21st century.

The world premiere of an expanded version of the musical composition Sanctuary by Roger Reynolds was presented on November 18. The work was performed by the red fish blue fish percussion ensemble. High school studio workshops included a tour and discussion of the exhibition followed by an in-studio printmaking activity.

Organization: The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art. Charles Ritchie, associate curator of modern prints and drawings, was the curator.

Sponsor: The exhibition was made possible by Lockheed Martin Corporation. Creation and performace of Sanctuary was made possible by the collaboration of the National Gallery of Art, the Contemporary Music Forum, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The performance was supported by the Randy Hostetler Living Room Fund of Washington DC.

Attendance: 75,619
