Wayne Thiebaud

In the course of creating Park Place, Thiebaud made an irrevocable decision: he had the print’s multiple plates trimmed down at the top, right, and bottom (compare proofs 9 and 13 with the final print; see slideshow, above). With no building on the right and less ground in the forefront, the final print intensifies the sense of plunging into the scene. For the work’s palette, however, Thiebaud avoided committing to a single choice — he published the identical image in full color, in black, and in red and black.
