Visitor Experience Volunteers

At this time, we are not accepting applications for the Visitor Experience Volunteer program.

Make a visitor’s lasting impression. Join the next class of visitor experience volunteers.

As a visitor experience volunteer you’ll welcome people of all ages to the National Gallery and help them discover our collection, exhibitions, programs, and campus.

You’ll also keep the information desks stocked with maps and brochures, answer visitor questions, respond to requests and comments, and much more.

Commitment

Volunteers agree to a two-year commitment of time and service, which includes orientation and onboarding.

Weekday volunteers are at the National Gallery one morning or afternoon for a four-hour shift per week. The minimum requirement is 46 shifts per year. Weekend volunteers work four-hour shifts on alternate Saturdays or Sundays, with a minimum requirement of 23 shifts per year.

Volunteers attend three annual meetings and dedicate personal time to learning about the National Gallery’s collections through continuing education programs.

Training

Orientation is conducted over the course of several Saturdays so volunteers can explore the National Gallery’s collection, programs, and policies. Training includes lectures, discussions, tours, and independent assignments.

During training, volunteers work with a National Gallery mentor for hands-on experience. They also follow guided tours and attend public programs.
