The second volume in the Mark J. Millard architectural series, this publication catalogs almost 100 books published in Britain from the 17th through the 19th centuries. The books included are not focused on aesthetic theory, practical handbooks and “cottage books,” or gardening, but on the great folio volumes in which the architecture of Britain was recorded in the 18th century. Among these are a group of significant topographical surveys, as well as large folios of the furniture makers of the 18th century, and books recording archaeological investigations of the architecture of antiquity, published to serve as the basis for a refinement of the classical style. Also included are big books—books intended for the gentleman-amateur’s library rather than the architect’s office or builder’s workshop.
