Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions received by the education staff.
If you do not find an answer to a question that you have, please email your query to [email protected]. Questions of general appeal to our website visitors will be posted as time permits.
Can I bring a backpack or diaper bag into the Gallery?
Yes, but if it’s a backpack you will be asked to check it—nothing may be carried on your back. There are checkrooms available free of charge and located at each entrance. Also, please be prepared to present all carried items (purses, diaper bags, backpacks) for inspection upon arrival.
Are strollers allowed?
Yes, the Gallery also provides strollers free of charge at all entrances. However, children may not be carried on the shoulders of another person or in a backpack child carrier. The exhibition spaces and public facilities are all accessible by elevator.
Can I bring snacks for my children?
Food is not permitted in the museum’s galleries or program spaces. Visitors may only eat in the designated dining areas. We recommend the Cascade Café, located on the East Building Concourse, for snacks.
Can my family write or sketch in the Gallery?
Yes, you are welcome to write and sketch at the Gallery. We recommend using a pencil.
Am I allowed to take pictures?
Yes, photography is allowed in the Gallery’s permanent collection, but it is prohibited in special exhibitions. If you are unsure about a particular work of art, just ask the guard nearby.
How does the Art Investigators sign-in process work?
Registration for Art Investigators is first-come, first-served on the day of the program. As soon as the museum opens to the public, a line forms at the Art Investigators sign-in table. We suggest that you arrive at least one hour before the desired tour time. Sometimes families will have to wait an hour for their tour, so we recommend that you plan to be flexible with your schedule, consider eating at the Gallery, or bring some books to pass the time. Occasionally, due to popularity, we cannot accommodate everyone for a tour. Sundays are typically our busiest days.
How do I register for a Family Workshop?
Workshop registration takes place online. Please note the registration date for the desired program and plan to be online just before noon. At noon, refresh your internet browser and the workshop registration form will appear. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, based on the time your registration form is submitted. Workshops are extremely popular and fill up quickly, and unfortunately, we cannot accommodate everyone who is interested. We recommend adding your name to the waiting list, as often spaces become available.
What do you offer for homeschoolers?
Individual families may register for any family program. Homeschool groups of ten or more may arrange weekday school tours; call (202) 842-6880 for more information.
