Professional Development

The National Gallery of Art provides K–12 educators and administrators professional development that deepens understanding of the visual arts and develops their teaching practice.

Summer Institute for Educators: Art and Thinking

Join us at the Gallery for an invigorating week of immersive learning designed to empower educators to teach critical thinking with works of art. The Summer Institute is a five-day seminar that helps pre-K–12 teachers of all subjects integrate visual art into classroom teaching. The program features in-gallery learning experiences, teaching-artist workshops, research-based presentations, and opportunities to experiment with teaching strategies such as Artful Thinking Routines.

Teacher Workshops

Workshops are designed to help teachers find meaning and pleasure in the visual arts. These programs introduce art in the Gallery's collection and in special exhibitions, explore interdisciplinary curriculum connections, and model methods for teaching with art. All programs include teaching resource materials.
