I should like to do portraits which will appear as revelations to people in a hundred years' time.
-- Letter to his sister Wil, 3 June 1890

This gallery and the two following contain works Van Gogh painted while he was living in Paris from 1886 to 1888. During this period he produced twenty-eight self-portraits. From a practical point of view, painting his own likeness was convenient when the artist could not afford a model. But Van Gogh's self-portraits also offer an image of the shifting artistic personality he wanted to project. In some paintings, such as Self-Portrait with Felt Hat, he appears as a bourgeois gentleman, sporting a felt hat and neat jacket . In others, such as Self-Portrait With Straw Hat, he presents himself as the country artist, wearing a blue peasant's blouse and straw hat.
