The official, and for many years the only, exhibition for artists' work in Paris. It was established and organized by the Académie Royale and was held in the Louvre's Salon Carré, from which it derived its name. The Salon was held regularly from 1737 on, first every other year, and beginning mid-century, annually.

Critical acclaim at the Salon was of great importance for the furtherance of an painter's career.
