Photograph: Abelia (Abelia grandiflora 'Edward Goucher') and Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet')
As the temperatures cool and the days get shorter, the plants respond in different ways. The sweetspire turns a deep reddish purple as its leaves start to drop. The abelia, which has bloomed profusely since the summer, slowly ends its flowering show.
