Kenyon Cox, Augustus Saint-Gaudens in His Studio in 1887, 1908, oil on canvas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gift of Friends of the Sculptor (through August F. Jaccaci) (08.130) © 1985 The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The artist models a relief portrait of the American painter William Merritt Chase. Saint-Gaudens holds clay in his left hand, while probably adding a round of clay to the relief to create Chase's palette. A sponge for moistening the clay rests on his easel, behind which the scaffolding for the Shaw Memorial can be glimpsed.
