Charles Brock
Associate Curator of American and British Paintings
National Gallery of Art, Washington

Brock first came to the Gallery in 1990 to assist the department of American paintings with organization and research for the major retrospective exhibitions of James McNeill Whistler (1994) and Winslow Homer (1995). From 1996 to 2002, Brock served as research associate in the department of photographs, where he worked with Sarah Greenough in developing and organizing the landmark exhibition Modern Art in America: Alfred Stieglitz and His New York Galleries (2001). After returning to the department of American and British paintings as assistant curator in 2002, Brock curated the critically acclaimed 2006 show Charles Sheeler: Across Media. Among the many other Gallery projects to which Brock has contributed are: George Caleb Bingham (1990), John Singer Sargent's El Jaleo (1992), John Singleton Copley's Watson and the Shark (1993), John James Audubon (1993), John Singleton Copley in England (1995), William Michael Harnett (1993), Thomas Eakins: The Rowing Pictures (1996), The Victorians: British Painting, 1837-1901 (1997), From Bingham to Eakins: The John Wilmerding Collection (2004), Winslow Homer in the National Gallery of Art (2005), and Edward Hopper (2007). In addition to the catalogue for Modern Art in America, and Charles Sheeler: Across Media, Brock has been a contributor to numerous other publications on American modernism, including The Eye of Duncan Phillips: A Collection in the Making (The Phillips Collection, 1999), Twentieth-Century American Art: The Ebsworth Collection (National Gallery of Art, 2000), A Century of Drawing: Works on Paper from Degas to LeWitt (National Gallery of Art, 2001), Eye Contact: Modern American Portraits from the National Portrait Gallery (National Portrait Gallery, 2002), and American Modernism: The Shein Collection (2009).
