    Interns’ Reports

    Center 43

The Center established the Howard University Undergraduate Internship as a pilot program in 2021, in partnership with Howard University and with support from the Mellon Foundation. This two-year program aims to create pathways to careers in museums and arts-related organizations for participating students.

This year, interns participated in a curriculum of weekly seminars that introduced topics in art history, museum studies, and related fields along with a focus on professional exploration and skill-building. They engaged with National Gallery colleagues and staff from various museums and cultural institutions through exhibition tours, departmental and institutional visits, research-in-progress and career spotlights, and hands-on activities. As a capstone to their first year, interns crafted individual National Gallery tours around three works of art, guided by independent research and their developing public engagement skills.

In year two of their program, the interns will participate in various departmental projects, with thoughtful guidance by mentors from across the National Gallery of Art.
