Carstairs Gallery

est. 1934

Biography

Carroll Carstairs was the son of Charles Stewart Carstairs [1865-1928], the London respresentative of M. Knoedler & Co., and his first wife. He was born in Philadelphia and educated at Yale. Carroll Carstairs joined the Knoedler firm before entering into the service in World War I, in which he was seriously injured. He returned to Knoedler's after the war, and with his father and two others purchased the firm in 1928 after the death of Roland F. Knoedler. In 1934 he left the firm and started his own art gallery. Carroll Carstairs was married in 1924 to Miss Burk Yuille. He died in 1948; records of the gallery were destroyed.
