Harriet Doane was a descendant of Elisha Doane [1762-1832] and his wife Jane Cutler [1765-1823] of Cohasset, MA. The Doanes were subjects of portraits now in the NGA (1943.1.3 and 1943.1.40). Elisha was born in Wellfleet, MA, the son of Elisha [1725-1783] and Hope Rich Doane [1725-1766]. Elisha the younger graduated from Harvard College in 1781. On 24 June 1783 he married Jane Cutler
1765-1823], daughter of John and Mary Clark Cutler of Boston. Elisha married secondly on 4 July 1825, to Elizabeth Cushing [1772-1841], daughter of the Hon. Charles and Elizabeth Sumner Cushing. Elisha Doane settled in Cohasset, where in addition to running a shipping business he also owned a grist and flour mill, a rope walk, and salt works. Elisha was survived by 4 of his seven children, including James Cutler Doane [1788-1878], grandfather of Harriet Doane. Harriet Doane married Charles Allan Howland, with whom she had a son, also named Charles Allan.
