Biography

Lady Vereker was born Roxana Wentworth Bowen, the daughter of Roxana Atwater Wentworth [1854-1935] and her husband Clarence Winthrop Bowen [1852-1935]. Clarence Winthrop Bowen was the son of Lucy Maria Tappan [1825-1863] and her husband Henry C. Bowen. Lucy Maria was the daughter of Lewis Tappan [1788-1873] and his first wife Susan Aspinwall, married 7 September 1813. Lewis was one of the eleven children [ten of whom survived to adulthood] of Benjamin [1747-1831] and Sarah Homes Tappan [1748-1826], whose portraits by Gilbert Stuart were commissioned by Lewis and are now in the collection of the NGA. Lewis Tappan's papers are in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, Washington. Clarence Winthrop Bowen was educated at Yale and married, 28 January 1892, Roxana Atwater Wentworth, daughter of John [1815-1888] and Roxana Loomis Wentworth of Chicago. John Wentworth served as mayor of Chicago 1857-1860, and was a descendant of the John Wentworth who represented New Hampshire in the Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation. A portrait of Roxana Atwater Wentworth [Mrs. Clarence Winthrop Bowen] by George P.A. Healy is also in the NGA. Clarence Winthrop Bowen was publisher of the Congregational Newspaper, The Independent, founded by his father. Roxana Wentworth Bowen married firstly to William Stephen Van Rensselaer (b. 1886) of the wealthy New York family, from whom she was later divorced. On 17 February 1945 she married Sir (George) Gordon Vereker [b. 1889]. At her death, Lady Vereker donated the Stuart and Healy portraits of her family to the NGA.
