This is a painting of a donkey standing in the snow. The scene depicts a solitary donkey with a heavy mane and a slightly forlorn expression, standing amidst a wintry landscape. In the background, leafless trees, a snow-covered expanse, and distant rooftops are partially visible, suggesting a rural setting. In the foreground, a small, colorful bird perches on a branch. The painting is titled "The Emigrant: A Cool Reception" in the style of Currier and Ives.

The image shows an elevated view of Plainville, Connecticut, from a southwest perspective. The horizon line is high, marking the transition from the foreground to the hills and buildings beyond. Hills span the width of the image, curving gently against the sky. Brushstrokes offer texture, especially in the trees and buildings. The color palette is monochromatic, in various shades of gray. Buildings, trees, and grazing cattle are visible in the foreground, leading to a more densely built town in the distance. The sky is soft with few clouds.
