Deborah Luster

American, born 1951

American photographer Deborah Luster explores the impact of violence, injustice, and incarceration on individuals and communities. Born in 1951 in Bend, Oregon, Luster began working as a photographer in the 1990s.

Among her most notable works is One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana (1998–2002). This series of over 25,000 photographs features people incarcerated across the state. Luster’s gelatin silver prints evoke formal portrait photography from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her subjects express their humanity and individuality.

Luster’s more recent work includes a series of photographs documenting the sites of murders in New Orleans, Louisiana. Like her earlier works, these images examine remembrance and loss.
