Martine Gutierrez

Martine Gutierrez creates work across many media: writing, music composition, performance, photography, public art, and video. Her art engages with popular culture, beauty standards, gender expression, and racial discrimination. In 2019, the artist created a magazine titled Indigenous Woman to examine her Mayan-Guatemalan heritage.

Gutierrez often takes on roles both in front of and behind the camera. She acts as model, creative director, photographer, and designer all at once. Her ANTI-ICON: APOKALYPSIS series explored mythological and historical figures such as Lady Godiva, Cleopatra, and Aphrodite. The series was exhibited on bus stops in New York City, Chicago, and Boston. Born in Berkeley, California, Gutierrez lives and works in New York City.
