The sculpture depicts a seated woman holding a small child in her lap. The woman is wearing a wide-brimmed hat and long dress. The child wears a short-sleeved dress and a bonnet. The child appears to be breastfeeding and is turned away from us. The woman looks outward, with a neutral expression. Her feet are resting on an uneven surface, and one of them is higher than the other. The sculpture is made of a brown, textured material.

Maternity: Madame Renoir and Son

Auguste Renoir, Richard Guino · c. 1916 · terracotta ·  Accession ID  1983.1.72

The sculpture depicts the bust of a young child with a full head of hair. Their facial features are simply rendered, with a subtle expression. The color of the sculpture is a dark, slightly glossy finish. The sculpture is mounted on a square pedestal base and is oriented in a direct, frontal manner. The combination of the smooth surface of the face against the detailed hair creates a realistic representation in three-dimensional space.
