This is a drawing of celestial beings among the clouds. The etching features a group of figures adorned with wings, positioned across fluffy clouds. In the center of the image, a prominent figure is seated higher than the others, holding a scepter-like object with rays extending towards it. The surrounding figures, also with wings, appear to be in various poses, some seated and some seemingly in flight. The use of light and shadow adds depth to the composition, bringing the clouds and clothing to life. The scene conveys a sense of movement and grandeur, supported by intricate linework and shading.

Virgin Enthroned in Glory with Saint Peter

Johann Gottfried Haid, Johann Daniel Herz the Elder · 1740s/1750s · etching on laid paper ·  Accession ID  2018.47.1

This is a drawing of an ornate classical frame with allegorical figures. The image depicts a richly decorated frame with swirling, rococo motifs. Within this intricate border, there are three figures: one seated, one standing, and one above, all dressed in flowing classical robes. The seated figure holds a staff-like object. The standing figure has a beard and a staff. The figure above appears winged. Delicately drawn architectural elements like the scrolled frame, cloud forms, and the way the figures interact within this composition hint at themes of storytelling or mythology. The line work is executed with fine detail, emphasizing the elegance and complexity typical of classical allegorical art.
