The image shows an abstract portrait of a face with wide, exaggerated features. The face has large spiral eyes, a small spiral nose, and a flat, slightly curved line as a mouth. The ears are large and protruding with spiral designs. There are two spiral-ended lines resembling arms or shoulders below the head. The background is plain and off-white. At the bottom, "self portrait" is written in bold, black letters, and there is a signature that reads "Calder 18-5-46."
