Artwork history & notes
Provenance
F. Stumpf; (his sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 28 February 1873, no. 8, as Entrée du bois Coubron, par une mantinée de printemps);[1] Maurice Kann [1839-1906], Paris, until at least 1878.[2] (M. Knoedler & Co., London, New York, and Paris); sold 1892 to Peter A.B. Widener, Lynnewood Hall, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania;[3] inheritance from Estate of Peter A.B. Widener by gift through power of appointment of Joseph E. Widener, Elkins Park; gift 1942 to NGA.
[1] Sales catalogue is entitled Collection de M. S***. However, Alfred Robaut, L'oeuvre de Corot, Paris, 1905: III:372, no. 2386, identifies Stumpf as the collector. This is most likely F. Stumpf, a friend of Corot and collector of Corot and other Barbizon painters.
[2] Annotated copy of 1873 sales catalogue in Frick Art Reference Library gives Kann as the purchaser; Robaut 1905 (see note 1) gives Kann as the owner in 1878.
[3] According to the 1931 Widener collection catalogue.
