The Locomotive

1923

Edward Hopper

Artist, American, 1882 - 1967

A gleaming black train engine approaches a low, wide tunnel opening in this horizontal etching. Cross-hatched lines create deep shadows in some areas, and lighter hatching or parallel lines contrast with the white of the paper to create highlights. The front half of the locomotive takes up the right half of the picture. Three people who stand on our side of the rails near the left edge of the composition are less than half as tall as the train. Two men near the train wear dark uniforms and flat-topped hats with narrow bills at the front. The third man is closer to us and is cut off by the left edge of the print. He wears a dark suit, and his arms are crossed over his midsection. His hat has a ribbon around the flat-topped crown and a brim. The tunnel opening is deeply shaded, and the bridge above blocks out most of the city scape behind it. The artist signed the sheet under the bottom right corner in graphite, “Edward Hopper.”
