Inscriptions

by artist?, upper left in pen and brown ink: ludovico; by later hand, lower left in pen and black ink: [undecipherable]; by later hand on nineteenth-century mount, in graphite along vertical border: Nothing to do with Calandrucci (1646-1707) or Maratta. Although the drawing reeks of Agostino Carracci and must date in the 1590s, the inscription at upper left: Ludovico, is either autograph or contemporary. cf the Argonauts (Windsor 2138, Wittkower Cat.
