This is a painting of a silhouetted artillery scene. The image is starkly black and white, using heavy contrasts to depict an artillery piece and a figure in the foreground of a battlefield. The figure is positioned beside the artillery, leaning forward with a long implement. The ground is uneven and the sky is depicted in patches of white against black, creating a turbulent atmosphere. The composition uses the silhouette technique to convey a somber scene.
