The image is a portrait engraving of Anna Maria van Schurman, depicting her from the waist up in a frontal position. She has a calm expression, slightly arched eyebrows, a straight nose, and full lips. Her hair is styled away from her face with curls around her ears and neck. She wears a draped garment with voluminous sleeves and holds a small object in her raised right hand. The other hand rests near her waist. The portrait is in an oval frame with her name. Cherubs on either side of the frame and a church tower in the background are visible. Mathematical instruments are incorporated into the border design.
